SIGNS OF ARTHRITIS

Is your dog struggling to get up off its bed, reluctant to move, and losing interest in their favourite things?

Are your old dog's back legs collapsing? If so, they may have canine arthritis, a painful and debilitating condition affecting the joints.

As arthritis worsens, actions that used to be second nature, like climbing the stairs, getting into the car, or playing, become an effort as they become slow, stiff, and sore.

Although veterinarians have an arsenal of pharmaceutical treatments for your dog's arthritis, they don't work for every pet, and these medications are not without issues.

As concerned dog owners search for new ways to help their pets overcome their health issues and regain their quality of life, more people are turning to CBD oil for dogs with arthritis.

CBD (cannabidiol) is a natural oil derived from the hemp plant. It's non-intoxicating and may offer a solution to help your dog live a healthier and happier life.

If you're searching for a supplementary form of arthritis treatment for your beloved dog that's all-natural and with no harsh chemicals, continue reading to find out about CBD oil for dogs with arthritis and joint pain relief for dogs.

What is arthritis?

Arthritis also called osteoarthritis or Degenerative Joint Disease (DJD), is a chronic condition affecting the joints.

Nowadays, dogs live longer than ever, thanks to advances in veterinary medicine and an increasing understanding of their needs. However, with this longevity comes increasing odds that your beloved dog will develop canine arthritis.

Although younger animals can suffer from this condition, the age-related degenerative form of arthritis is more likely to become a problem as your dog advances in years.

As your dog ages, the protective cartilage surfaces of the joints become thinner, and the cartilage cells begin to die. When this happens, the cells release enzymes that cause inflammation of the joint capsule, and bony growths can develop.

When the cartilage thinning becomes severe, the joint space decreases, causing friction and deterioration of the bones. These processes cause changes to how the joint functions and set off a spiral of pain and reluctance to use the limb, which leads to stiffness and muscle atrophy.

Arthritis most commonly affects the lower back, hips, and other leg joints, although it can develop in any joint in your dog's body.

Struggling to cope with arthritis can severely impact your dog's quality of life.

How many dogs suffer from arthritis?

Arthritis in dogs is the most common joint disease that vets diagnose. Experts estimate that in North America, 20%1 of all dogs over one year of age suffer from this painful condition. Some figures suggest that in dogs older than eight years, this statistic jumps to 80%.

Arthritis in dogs is widespread but challenging to treat, with many dogs unresponsive to conventional therapeutic approaches.

Some of the key pain areas

The dog breeds that are most at risk of arthritis

Most veterinarians agree that a dog's breeding affects its likelihood of developing arthritis.

It's more common in larger breeds with higher body weights. Additionally, inherited defects in conformation, or how the dog is put together, can affect purebred dogs and increase their risk of arthritis.

A 2018 review found that purebred dogs were significantly more likely to develop arthritis than mixed-breed dogs. The same review also found the following 11 breeds were the most at risk of developing arthritis:

· Border Collie
· Bull Mastiff
· Dogue de Bordeaux
· German Pointer
· German Shepherd Dog
· Golden Retriever
· Labrador Retriever
· Old English Sheepdog
· Rottweiler
· Scottish Collie
· Springer Spaniel

How CBD works in your dog's body

CBD isn't a new discovery, but it's gained traction in the veterinary medicine field as research begins to highlight its potential. Early studies³ have indicated that CBD may decrease pain response in mice with arthritis and improve fracture healing through collagen cross-linking, but these effects have not been validated in quality studies in humans.

In a recent 2018 study,² researchers looked at using CBD for dogs with osteoarthritis. The results were extremely promising, with more than 80% of dogs treated with CBD showing significant improvements in pain levels and quality of life.

What's more, as CBD is all-natural and non-intoxicating, there were no discernible side effects. The authors concluded that using CBD twice daily could help to improve dogs' activity levels and comfort.

The reason that CBD oil can help dogs with arthritis is through the endocannabinoid system (ECS). Evidence⁴ suggests that all animals have an ECS. Our bodies naturally produce bioactive substances called endocannabinoids, which are entirely unrelated to cannabis use.

The ECS plays an essential role in maintaining homeostasis in the body, including regulating sleep, pain, appetite, and the immune system.

CBD can interact with the cannabinoid (CB) receptors of the ECS and help support their activities. Currently, experts believe there are two types of receptors: CB1, in the brain and central nervous system, and CB2, in the liver and immune system, but studies are still in their early stages.

CBD interacts with natural ECS function, which may support the health and wellbeing of your dog.

CBD products for dogs

The fantastic thing about CBD for dogs is that you can use a double-pronged approach with oral and topical products. Together, these therapies can offer your pet the maximum possible relief.

You can choose bespoke veterinary CBD oils to administer to your pet orally, leading to a level of effect throughout the body.

We also offer veterinarian-formulated dog treats infused with CBD, Glucosamine, Chondroitin and Boswellia to support mobility and aid cartilage development. These easy-to-use peanut butter flavoured treats offer a convenient and tasty way to give your dog CBD consistently throughout the day - with each treat containing 5mg CBD.

You can also use topical CBD to apply wherever you need targeted results.

The skin is the largest organ in the body, with an abundance of CB receptors. CBD applied to the skin allows you to reach localized clusters of these receptors while bypassing the digestive and circulatory systems.

Naturecan has designed the ultimate in CBD products for dogs with arthritis. Our Hip and Joint Pain Relief Gel for Dogs with the power of CBD, Boswellia, chondroitin, and glucosamine could be the key to a happier life for your dog.

Boswellia is a herbal tree extract used for centuries in Asian and African traditional medicine. Advocates believe that Boswellia is a potent anti-inflammatory and painkiller. Recent studies5 support these conclusions.

Chondroitin and glucosamine are structural components of joint cartilage, where they increase water retention to cushion the bones. Research6 shows that these essential biological elements may reduce pain, stiffness and improve physical function.

Naturecan's Hip and Joint Pain Relief Gel for Dogs has a light, nongreasy texture that you can easily massage into your dog's skin regardless of how much fur they have. The pain-relieving ingredients begin to work as soon as the gel meets the skin.

Consider adding a pre-and post-exercise application of the Hip and Joint Pain Relief Gel to your dog's dosage schedule or use it as needed.

Choosing a quality CBD product

You must buy CBD products from a reputable company. At Naturecan, we are committed to safe and stringent testing, so you're guaranteed only the best.

Dog owners are often worried about tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) in hemp products. THC is the primary psychoactive compound of cannabis that produces a high sensation. It can be fatal to cats and cause severe trauma to dogs and horses.

Check for a third-party Certificate of Analysis (CoA) stating that the THC levels of the CBD product are < 0.1%. However, as there are no global standards for THC testing, you must remain cautious. Verify the date of the CoA and note the laboratory’s name on the second page. There should also be confirmation that the lab has an ISO17025 accreditation, which is the highest standard for lab testing.

You can also check whether the lab has this accreditation online: Search PJLA's Listing of Accredited Labs (pjlabs.com)
Alternatively, you can search for the UK labs via the UKAS website: Search Accredited Organisations - UKAS

All third-party testing labs should have this accreditation, but very few do. At Naturecan, we only use ISO17025 accredited labs and follow strict standards to guarantee your pet's health and happiness.

Arthritis has no cure

Sadly, arthritis isn't curable, and the condition worsens as your dog ages. It can be devastating news for anyone who adores their pets and wants them to live the best life possible.

Typically, vets treat arthritis in dogs with nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), such as Rimadyl and Metacam. The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA)7 warns pet owners that the common side effects of these drugs include vomiting, diarrhoea, reduced appetite, and lethargy. They also list gastrointestinal ulcers and liver and kidney toxicity as some potentially severe side effects. Additionally, NSAIDs should only be used for the shortest duration possible, meaning they are not a long-term solution to your dog's arthritis.

If you're looking for a natural alternative to traditional veterinary medications, consider hemp-derived CBD. At Naturecan, our premium broad-spectrum CBD products support your dog's health safely and effectively, allowing you and your dog to spend many more happy years together.
